Summary of proposed regulation change:
This proposal suggests a threshold hunt for the Mayo MMU. It also proposes changing the opening day of moose hunting season in the May MMU to September 1st.
Board recommendation:
The Board recommended the Minister accept the proposal, specifically for a threshold hunt with a harvest limit of 13 animals.
Status of Board recommendation:
The Minister of Environment varied the Board’s recommendation, opting for Ministerial Discretion to determine the sustainable harvest limit and the season dates.
Outcome in regulation:
This change has been enacted in legislation (February 2022) and will come into effect before the 2022-2023 hunting season. The Mayo threshold hunt will open on September 1, 2022, and be limited to 11 moose. This change applies to Game Management Subzones 2–56, 2–58, 2–59, 2–62, 2–63 and 4–04 to 4–06.
