Yukon government directs mining company to implement ‘safeguard’ measures after spill
Yukon mines minister John Streicker says the territorial government has directed Victoria Gold to stabilize the area where the Eagle Gold mine disaster happened and more closely monitor surface and groundwater near the slide site.

A failure at the Eagle mine last month saw a landslide tear off part of the mine’s heap leach pad, used to process ore and extract gold. The damage, which has hobbled operations since, caused cyanide, metals and other contaminants to spill into the environment.

In a statement released Wednesday, Na-Cho Nyäk Dun First Nation said they also want an independent investigation and review into what they call “the region’s most recent and potentially catastrophic mining failure.”
